Description: Toly is a peasant. His parents died deep in debt, with nothing to leave him, and so at the age of fourteen he was kindly taken on by the local priest as a general servant, responsible for the upkeep of the chapel and surroundings in return for food and shelter. He has a son, Osbert, whose mother died in childbirth; the loss is still with him.
